Employee Self-Service (ESS)
Employee self-service is the part of an HR system employees use directly — viewing payslips, applying for leave, updating details and raising requests without going through HR.
Also known as: ESS, self service portal
The case for it is arithmetic. A 300-person company generates a steady stream of routine requests — payslip copies, leave balances, address changes — and each one costs an HR person several minutes plus a context switch. Self-service removes the request rather than speeding it up.
Adoption is decided by the mobile experience, not the desktop one. Most of the workforce interacts with HR from a phone, occasionally, and a portal that requires a laptop simply routes the request back through HR by another channel.
The second-order benefit is data quality: employees correct their own bank details and addresses more reliably than an HR team transcribing them from an email.
