Payslip
A payslip is the statement issued each pay period showing what an employee earned, what was deducted and what was paid — the record of a single salary payment.
Also known as: salary slip, pay stub, payslip format
It has to be legible as well as accurate. A payslip showing only gross and net answers nothing; the value is in the breakdown, because that is what lets an employee check the deduction they were not expecting.
Employees rely on payslips well beyond payday — for loan applications, visa paperwork and rental agreements — which is an argument for making them self-serviceable rather than a request to HR.
Issuing a payslip is a statutory obligation for covered employees, and the required particulars are prescribed rather than a matter of taste.
Statutory note
Wage legislation and state rules prescribe payslip particulars and issue timelines for covered employees. Confirm what applies to your establishment.

Payroll Cycle
A payroll cycle is the recurring period a payroll run covers, together with its cut-off dates for attendance, changes and approvals before the run is processed.
Employee Self-Service (ESS)
Employee self-service is the part of an HR system employees use directly — viewing payslips, applying for leave, updating details and raising requests without going through HR.
