India workforce statistics, every figure sourced

28statistics about how India actually works — who is in the labour force, who is employed on a payroll, and who is not. Each one links to the publisher's own data and states the year it refers to, so you can check it rather than take our word for it.

Only 25.1%of Indian workers hold a wage or salaried job — against a world figure of 53.6%. Most writing about “the Indian workforce” describes the quarter that has a payslip.

Low headline unemployment coexists with very high informality — see the vulnerable-employment figure below. Both are true.

World Bank (modelled ILO estimate)·data year 2025

4.1%

unemployment rate among women

Almost identical to the male rate, because unemployment only counts people looking for work — most women are outside the labour force entirely.

World Bank (modelled ILO estimate)·data year 2025

4.2%

17.5%

youth unemployment rate among young women

World Bank (modelled ILO estimate)·data year 2025

How this page is sourced

Every figure was read from the publishing organisation's own data and links to it. Nothing here is quoted from another company's blog post, and nothing is an estimate of ours. Sources cited: World Bank (modelled ILO estimate).

What is deliberately missing. The Indian statistics most often quoted in HR writing — EPFO monthly payroll additions, PLFS headline rates, ESIC registrations — are not on this page. Their publishers either block automated access or release only as scanned PDFs, so we could not verify the figures against the source. A statistic we cannot check is exactly what this page exists to avoid, and leaving it out is more useful to you than repeating it.

And no data of our own.We have not published survey findings here, because we have not run a survey. Any “State of HR” figures attributed to SignHR would be invented, and a statistics page that invents one number is worth nothing on all the others.

These indicators are updated annually by their publishers. If you are reading this well after 2025, check the source links for newer data.

Running HR for the quarter that has a payslip

SignHR handles attendance, leave, shifts and payroll inputs for Indian teams of 20 to 2,000 — including the shift and field staff these figures are mostly about.

In their words

Loved by the people who run HR.

Hear what HR leaders across India say about running people ops on SignHR.

Our QC checks are logged every single shift. My last audit was a five-minute export instead of a week digging through registers.
