Probation Period
Probation is an initial period of employment during which both sides assess the fit, usually carrying a shorter notice period and reduced access to some benefits until the employee is confirmed.
Also known as: probation meaning, probation period India, confirmation
Three to six months is typical in India, set by the employment contract rather than by statute. What changes during probation is generally the notice period — often days rather than months — and sometimes eligibility for certain leave types or benefits.
The detail that matters most is confirmation, and it is the one most often mishandled. Probation does not usually end by itself: a confirmation letter marks it, and where none is issued the employee may be treated as confirmed by conduct once the period lapses. An organisation that lets probation quietly expire has, in practice, confirmed the person without deciding to.
Extension is possible where the contract allows it, but it needs to be communicated in writing before the original period ends, with a reason and a defined new end date. An extension granted after expiry is difficult to rely on.
The useful discipline is to treat the confirmation date as a scheduled decision with an owner, not a date that passes. That is a small process change and it removes most probation disputes entirely.

Notice Period
Notice period is the time an employee must continue working after resigning, or that an employer must give before terminating, as set by the employment contract.
Full and Final Settlement (F&F)
Full and final settlement is the closing calculation when an employee leaves — everything still owed to them, less everything they owe, paid as one amount after the last working day.
CTC (Cost to Company)
CTC is the total annual cost an employer bears for an employee — salary, allowances, employer contributions and benefits combined — not the amount the employee receives.
Performance Review
A performance review is a periodic, documented assessment of how an employee has performed against agreed objectives, usually feeding pay, promotion and development decisions.
