Exit Interview
An exit interview is a structured conversation with a departing employee about why they are leaving and what the organisation could have done differently.
Also known as: exit interview questions, exit survey
Its value depends entirely on what happens afterwards. Conducted well and aggregated, exit data is the clearest signal an organisation gets about management quality, pay competitiveness and workload. Conducted as a formality and filed, it is a meeting nobody wanted.
Timing and interviewer both matter. A conversation run by the person's own manager rarely surfaces anything about that manager, and one held on the last afternoon competes with handover.
The honest caveat is that leavers manage their answers — most want a reference and a clean exit. Patterns across many exits are therefore more reliable than any single conversation.
